Teaching tips

  • Start with sums within 10 until they are automatic, then move to sums within 20. Fluency with these facts makes every later skill easier.
  • When introducing regrouping (carrying), let students use base-ten blocks or draw place-value charts for the first few problems.
  • Use the "No regrouping" sheets as a confidence builder before the "With regrouping" sheets on the same number size.
  • Short, daily practice (5–10 minutes) beats one long weekly session. Print a new sheet each day; problems are different every time.
