Tip for this table
Answers in the 5 times table always end in 5 or 0. Half of ten times the number works too: 5 × 8 = half of 80 = 40.
Teaching tips for multiplication
- Learn the tables in an easy order: 0, 1, 2, 5 and 10 first, then 3, 4, 9, 11, and finally 6, 7, 8 and 12.
- Use timed drills sparingly; accuracy first, speed later. Have students track their own score over several days.
- Point out the commutative property: 7 × 8 is the same as 8 × 7, which halves the facts to memorize.
- Before multi-digit multiplication, make sure students can multiply by 10 and 100 and know their facts fluently.
